Resistance Is an Act of Love–Part II
“Agape is not weak, passive love. It is love in action. ~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr./Stride Toward Freedom
This quote is taken from Dr. King’s memoir of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In the book he used the ancient Greek word ‘agape’, which means selfless love. Throughout his work for civil rights, he suffered under the brutality of the KKK and gave his life resisting unjust systems while preaching peace and nonviolence. Today, as we celebrate his life and legacy, we too are living under the oppressive, hate filled next generation of the KKK, the white Christian nationalist movement. Ironically, on January 15, 2025, Martin Luther King’s actual birthday, we witnessed the confirmation hearing of a white Christian nationalist sympathizer to be the next secretary of defense. In Indiana, we elected a self-proclaimed white Christian nationalist as our Lt. Governor. Such bitter pills!
Now, perhaps more than ever, it is up to us who believe in MLK’s legacy to continue in the struggle for justice for all people, regardless of race, class or creed. Our actions must be fueled by love. Let us continue his legacy of selfless love and nonviolent resistance.
Happy Birthday Dear Brother!
Did You Know:
Today, January 20, 2025, Hoosiers for Democracy is hosting a Reclaim, Rebuild, and Resist Rally that commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and symbolizes our resistance to the inauguration of a President who ignores the rule of law and promises to unravel the constitution. We are also resisting the extremist legislation that is being crafted in our Statehouse. The rally is an act of love for our constitution and the foundational American values of liberty, equality and justice for all. We know these values are not applied equally and that many in our country are denied basic human and civil rights that others are afforded. We know that these values are under further assault by our incoming state and federal administrations. We stand in resistance to that assault and in solidarity with the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Why It Matters:
This rally is a call to action. Now is not the time to sit on the sidelines of politics. We must use our collective voices as an act of love and an act of resistance. We need to stand up for our Constitution and our commitment to E Pluribus Unum–out of many, one. So join us and spread the word as we:
Reclaim the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Rebuild a stronger more inclusive society and the democratic institutions that are being undermined
Resist the policies and actions that threaten our freedoms and civil rights.
As we brace for what is to come later this afternoon as Donald Trump becomes our 47th president, we must be the torch bearers of love, truth, and justice. We must be clear eyed about what is happening while not letting the events of the next several months wear us down. In times of collapse and corruption, social movements have been the vehicles for change and transformation. There are pro-democracy movements taking root across the country. These movements are our conveyor belts for justice and freedom. They connect us with one another and help build a beloved community.
